Gingham Trend

One of the spring and summer 2017s biggest fashion trend might be one you may have least expected. When you think of gingham print, what is one of the first things that come to your mind? I am met with images of picnic table cloths and Dorothy holding Toto from The Wizard of Oz. Not the most fashion-forward visions. Today’s gingham trend gives me preppy-meets-contemporary, retro chic vibes. Let’s fast forward…

Gingham print is being resurrected from 2014. That is the last time gingham was a major style statement. However if you were to pick up any of the staple, fashion magazines like Harper’s Bazaar, InStyle or Elle you will find headlines and photo galleries anointing gingham the ‘must-have’ print for spring. That makes it legit, right? Straight off of the runways of London’s Fashion week last fall, gingham has permeated street style and staked its place in the hearts of many an influencer.

In the spring fashion issue of the The Cut, the three contributors share, “Gingham wasn’t always checked — it began as striped fabric … and the crosshatches arrived in the 18th century.” Gingham evoked symbols of saccharin and innocence. That was then. Modish yet edgy is the name of the game when it comes to creating contemporary style.

The trick is how one nails this look with confidence and style now! Some tips from yours truly…Wear a gingham print dress with white Converse or casual sneakers for a modern, less syrupy take on the trend. Another stylish way to rock this look is double up on the trends. Pair a gingham blouse that has statement sleeves with wide-leg pants for a chic, office look. Make like a modern-day Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and pair cropped gingham trousers with a crisp, contrasting button-up top or a dark, denim shirt. You can also mix prints, for instance pair a gingham top with a floral printed maxi skirt. Play with that and have fun. Tone down large, gingham print or an all-over gingham print with layers, such as a denim jacket or light cardigan in a complementary color.

I am loving the some of the gingham looks out for the spring and summer. I've shared some of my favorites below. You can click on any image for more details. My favorite might be the blazer. I can easily get about 4 different looks, from casual to 9-5 chic, from it. Which jumps out to you?
